# Meta tags that _earn the click_.

A title and two lines are all a searcher reads. Your [SEO agent](/agents/seo) writes a unique title and description for every page, and checks them on every publish.

---

## What are meta tags?

Meta tags are short pieces of text in a page’s HTML code that [describe it to search engines](/features/seo-geo). The two that matter most, the title tag and meta description, work as a pair: the title tag is shown as the blue link in Google, and the description as the lines below it. They do not appear on the page itself, but they are often the first thing people read about it, and they decide whether a searcher clicks.

## Why meta tags still matter.

Rankings get a page onto the results; the title and description decide whether anyone clicks it. When they are missing, copied from another page or cut off mid-sentence, Google often writes its own snippet, rarely the one you would have chosen.

- 35%

of websites have duplicate title tags.

- 30%

of websites have duplicate meta descriptions.

- 25%

of websites have no meta descriptions at all.

## How it works.

On every publish, four steps. You only do the last one.

1. ### Reads every page

The SEO agent reads each page’s content, its current title and description, and the target keyword it should win.

2. ### Checks the tags

Missing, duplicate, too long or too short, or no longer matching what the page says: every title and description is checked.

3. ### Writes better ones

It writes a unique title and description that match the search intent, end with a clear call to action, and fit in search results.

4. ### You approve, or it publishes

The new tags wait in a preview with a short report: publish them, edit them, or turn them down. Or switch the routine to automatic and the SEO agent publishes them itself. Every version is kept.

## Before and after.

One page, three changes, and what a searcher sees once the SEO agent fixes them. The fixes are highlighted.

/jackets/waxed

- **Title tag: the blue link in Google**: Before:“Acme | Home”, the same title as six other pages
- After:“Waxed jackets for men | Acme”, unique to this page
- **Meta description: the lines under the link**: Before:Missing, so Google picks a random sentence from the page
- After: “Waxed cotton jackets built to last, with free repairs for life.”
- **Target keyword: the words people type**: Before:“Waxed jackets” appears nowhere in the title
- After: “Waxed jackets” in the first words of the title

---

## What you get.

- ### More clicks from the same rankings

Your page keeps its position, but a clear title and a description that answers the search make people choose it over the pages ranked just above and below.

- ### No duplicates, no gaps

Every page has its own title and description, so Google can tell your pages apart and show the right one.

- ### Every new page covered

Pages published by your team or by other agents get their meta tags on publish, without anyone remembering to add them.

---

## What it checks.

Every title and every description, on every page, each time the site changes.

- ### Title tags

Like a title tag checker: missing titles, duplicate title tags shared by several pages, titles too long to display in full, and titles that leave out the main search.

- ### Meta descriptions

Like a meta description length checker: missing descriptions, duplicate meta descriptions, and descriptions so long they are cut off mid-sentence.

- ### New pages

Like a meta tag generator built into your site: each new page gets a title and description written for it when it is published.

## Works with your tools.

The SEO agent reads your pages itself. Search Console shows each page’s searches, Semrush or Ahrefs add their audits.

## Questions about meta tags.

Straight answers.

### What is a meta description generator?

A meta description generator writes the short summary shown under your page in search results. Most tools generate descriptions one page at a time, from text you paste in. The SEO agent works on the whole site: it reads each page, writes a unique description that matches it, checks the length, and updates it when the page changes.

### How long should a title tag be?

Google sets no maximum: its documentation says a title can be any length, but the title link is truncated to fit the device width. In practice, aim for 50 to 60 characters: according to Zyppy’s analysis of more than 81,000 title tags, that is what displays in full on desktop, while mobile can show up to 70 to 80. The SEO agent puts the target keyword first, so the words that matter are never cut. [Source: Google Search Central, “Influencing your title links in search results”](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/title-link) [Source: Zyppy, “The Ideal Title Tag Length for Google SEO”](https://zyppy.com/title-tags/meta-title-tag-length/)

### How long should a meta description be?

Google sets no character limit: its documentation says a meta description can be any length, but the snippet is truncated to fit the device width. In practice, a meta description length checker warns when the character count goes above about 155 characters, roughly the number of characters that fits on a desktop result. The SEO agent keeps the key message in the first part, so nothing important is cut. [Source: Google Search Central, “Control your snippets in search results”](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/snippet)

### Are duplicate meta descriptions bad?

They do not trigger a penalty, but they waste the space. Google’s own guidance is that identical or similar descriptions on every page are not helpful when individual pages appear in search results. When several pages share one description, searchers cannot tell them apart, and Google often replaces it with text taken from the page. [Source: Google Search Central, “Control your snippets in search results”](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/snippet)

### Do duplicate title tags hurt SEO?

They make your pages harder to tell apart. When multiple pages, like product pages in the same range, share one duplicate title, Google has to guess which one answers a search, and searchers see identical links. According to a Semrush study of 100,000 websites, 35% of sites have this problem. The SEO agent gives each page a title of its own. [Source: Semrush, study of 100,000 websites (2016)](https://www.semrush.com/blog/semrush-study-on-site-seo-issues/)

### Does Google rewrite titles and descriptions?

Often. An Ahrefs study found that Google rewrites meta descriptions 62.78% of the time, and a Zyppy study of 80,959 titles found it rewrote 61.6% of them. Rewrites are most common when a tag is missing, too long, or does not match the page, which are exactly the problems the SEO agent fixes. [Source: Ahrefs, “How Often Does Google Rewrite Meta Descriptions?”](https://ahrefs.com/blog/meta-description-study/) [Source: Zyppy, “Google Rewrites 61% of Page Title Tags”](https://zyppy.com/seo/google-title-rewrites/)

### How is this different from keyword optimization?

Both are routines of the SEO agent. Meta tags makes sure every page has a unique, well-sized title and description. [Keyword optimization](/agents/keyword-optimization) goes deeper on pages that already rank: it finds the searches a page almost wins and works them into the title, headings and copy.
