[Agents](/features/agents) [SEO](/agents/seo) Keyword cannibalization

# Keyword cannibalization, _found and settled_.

Two of your pages chase the same search and neither reaches the top. Your [SEO agent](/agents/seo) checks every month which pages compete and proposes the fix.

---

## What is keyword cannibalization?

Keyword cannibalization happens when several pages of the same site end up targeting the same keywords with the same intent, so [Google cannot tell which one deserves to rank](/features/seo-geo). It alternates between them, the clicks and links are split, and often neither ranks as well as one strong page would. Not every overlap is cannibalization: two pages that answer different needs can both rank, and that is a good thing.

“waxed jackets for men”

| Page | Position | Clicks |
| --- | --- | --- |
| /jackets/waxedSame intent: merge proposed | 11.4 | 96 |
| /blog/best-waxed-jacketsSame intent: merge proposed | 12.8 | 71 |
| /guides/rewax-a-jacket | 38.0 | 4 |

## Why it costs you rankings, and when it does not.

When two pages answer the same question, they split the clicks, the links and Google’s attention, and Google may switch from one to the other every week, so neither builds a stable position. But overlap alone is not a problem: Google’s John Mueller, who answers SEO questions on behalf of Google Search, has said that three of your pages in the same results is not an issue “just because it’s more than 1”. The skill is telling the two cases apart.

## Signs two pages are competing.

You can spot each of them in Google Search Console.

- ### Rankings that swap

For the same search, Google shows one page this week and another the next, and the position jumps each time it changes its mind.

- ### Both stuck on page two

Two pages hover around positions 10 to 20 for the same search, when one stronger page could be in the top five.

- ### Clicks split in two

The clicks for one search are shared between two of your URLs, so each looks weak in your reports.

- ### Same question, two answers

A feature page and a blog post with the same angle, two landing pages for the same offer, or two articles with similar content written a year apart.

---

## How it works.

Every month, four steps. You only do the last one.

1. ### Finds the overlaps

The SEO agent reads Search Console and lists every search query where more than one of your pages appears, the competing pages behind each one.

2. ### Sorts harmful from healthy

It compares the intent of each page and how they perform together, and keeps only the overlaps that actually cost you traffic.

3. ### Prepares the fix

Merge the pages, sharpen each one on its own intent, or point Google to the right version, depending on the case.

4. ### You approve, or it publishes

The changes wait in a preview with a short report: publish them, edit them, or turn them down. Or switch the routine to automatic and the SEO agent publishes them itself. Every version is kept.

---

## Before and after.

Two pages, one search, and what changes once the SEO agent settles it. The fixes are highlighted.

/jackets/waxed and /blog/best-waxed-jackets

- **Content: the blog post**: Before:Repeats the product page with a “best jackets” angle
- After: Merged into the product page, its best sections kept
- **Old URL: the blog post’s address**: Before:Still live, competing for the same search
- After: Redirects to the product page, with its visitors and links
- **Internal links: “waxed jackets for men”**: Before:Point to both pages, so Google gets mixed signals
- After:Point to the product page only

---

## What you get.

- ### One page per search

For each search that matters, Google knows which of your pages to show, and keeps showing it.

- ### Stronger pages

The clicks, links and content that were split between two pages now work for one.

- ### Healthy overlaps left alone

When two pages answer different needs and both rank, the SEO agent leaves them be. No change for the sake of change.

---

## Merge, differentiate, or leave alone.

There is no single fix for keyword cannibalization. The SEO agent picks the one that fits each case.

- ### Merge

When two pages answer the same question, keep the most relevant page, fold in the best content of the other, and set up 301 redirects from the old address so its visitors and links follow.

- ### Differentiate

When both pages deserve to exist, sharpen each one on its own intent, for example a feature page for buyers and a guide for people still learning, and adjust the titles and links to match.

- ### Point to the right version

When two pages are near copies, like product pages that differ only by a filter, or a printable version, a canonical tag tells Google which one to rank without removing the other.

- ### Leave alone

When the pages serve different needs, or both already rank well, nothing needs fixing. Two of your pages on the first page of Google is a win.

## Works with your tools.

Search Console shows every search where several of your pages appear. Semrush or Ahrefs add their reports.

## Keyword cannibalization: your questions.

Straight answers.

### How do I find keyword cannibalization?

In Google Search Console, open the Performance report, pick a search, and look at the Pages tab. If several of your pages get impressions for it, and the page Google shows keeps changing from week to week, they may be competing. Doing this search by search takes hours; the SEO agent checks every search on your site each month.

### Is keyword cannibalization bad for SEO?

Sometimes. Google does not penalise a site for having several pages on one topic, and John Mueller, who answers SEO questions on behalf of Google Search, has said that several of your pages in the same results is not a problem in itself. It becomes one when pages with the same intent split the clicks and links, and none of them ranks as well as a single page would. [Source: Search Engine Journal, Google answers a question about keyword cannibalization (2025)](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-answers-seo-question-about-keyword-cannibalization/556472/)

### How do I fix keyword cannibalization?

Pick the page that should rank, then either merge the other one into it with a redirect, or rewrite the other one to target a different need. Update the internal links so they point to the right page, and use a canonical tag for near copies. The SEO agent prepares whichever fix fits, and publishes it on its own or after your approval in a preview.

### Is the SEO agent a keyword cannibalization tool?

Yes, and it does the part most tools leave to you. A keyword cannibalization tool usually lists every search where two of your pages appear, including the many cases that are harmless. The SEO agent focuses on the real cannibalization issues: it judges which overlaps actually cost traffic, and prepares the merge, the rewrite or the redirect for those only.

### How do I avoid keyword cannibalization?

Before writing a new piece of content, check whether one of your pages already covers that search. If it does, update and expand that page instead of publishing a second one, and give each new page a clear intent of its own. Avoiding keyword cannibalization is mostly a habit; the SEO agent makes it a routine by flagging new overlaps every month.

### Will merging two pages lose traffic?

Not when it is done properly. A permanent redirect from the old address sends its visitors, and the links pointing to it, to the page you keep. The merged page usually ends up stronger than either of the two, because it combines their best content and their links.

### How often should I check for it?

Once a month is enough for most sites. Cannibalization builds up slowly, as you publish new posts on topics you have already covered, so the SEO agent checks monthly and flags new overlaps as they appear.

### How is this different from keyword optimization?

Both are routines of the SEO agent. [Keyword optimization](/agents/keyword-optimization) helps one page rank for the searches it almost wins. Keyword cannibalization makes sure two of your pages are not fighting for the same search in the first place.

### Which plan includes it?
