# Internal linking that _leaves no page behind_.

A new guide nobody links to, a link that says “click here”. Your [SEO agent](/agents/seo) maps every link each week and places the right links in context.

---

## What is internal linking?

Internal linking means connecting the pages of your own site to each other, through contextual links inside the text and navigational links in the menu and the footer. Those links are how visitors find their next page, and [how a search engine crawler like Googlebot discovers your pages](/features/seo-geo) and works out which ones matter most. A page that no other page links to, called an orphan page, is hard to find for both.

## Why internal links matter.

Links from other websites are hard to earn; links between your own pages are entirely in your hands. They tell Google which pages are important and what each one is about, and they guide visitors to the pages that convert. Yet most sites add pages faster than they link them, so the newest content, often the content your SEO strategy depends on for organic traffic, is the least connected.

- 1

link from another page of your site: Google’s minimum for every page you care about.

- 4×

more clicks from Google for pages with 40 to 44 internal links than for pages with 0 to 4.

- 5×

more traffic for pages with at least one internal link whose anchor text matches the search.

## Signs your internal linking needs work.

They rarely show on the page. They show in what Google indexes and what visitors never reach.

- ### Pages Google never shows

A page is published, but weeks later it has no impressions in Search Console, often because nothing on the site points to it.

- ### New posts nobody links to

Every new blog post links to older ones, but no older page links back, so each new article starts life as an orphan.

- ### Key pages buried deep

The pages that bring conversions, like product, pricing or contact pages, sit several clicks away from the homepage, behind menus and archives visitors rarely open.

- ### “Click here” everywhere

Links whose clickable words say nothing about the page they lead to, so neither readers nor Google know what to expect.

---

## How it works.

Every week, four steps. You only do the last one.

1. ### Maps every link

The SEO agent reads every page and draws the full map of your internal links: which page links to which, and with which words.

2. ### Finds the gaps

Orphan pages, important pages with too few internal links pointing to them, and anchor text that does not describe the page it leads to.

3. ### Places links in context

It decides where to add internal links: inside sentences that already talk about the topic, with clear anchor text, and never more than a web page can reasonably carry.

4. ### You approve, or it publishes

The new links wait in a preview with a short report: publish them, edit them, or turn them down. Or switch the routine to automatic and the SEO agent publishes them itself. Every version is kept.

## Before and after.

One guide, three changes, and what they do for the pages around it. The fixes are highlighted.

/guides/rewax-a-jacket

- **Orphan page: free repairs for life**: Before:No page on the site links to it, so Google rarely finds it
- After:Linked from four related guides
- **Contextual link: a sentence in the guide**: Before:“Shop our waxed jackets” is plain text
- After:“Shop our waxed jackets” links to the waxed jackets page
- **Anchor text: the clickable words**: Before:“Click here”
- After:“waxed jackets for men”

---

## What you get.

- ### Every page reachable

No more orphan pages: every page you publish is linked from the pages that talk about the same topic.

- ### Key pages get the links

The pages that matter most for your business, like product, pricing or contact pages, receive links from your most visited content, which helps them rank.

- ### Readers find the next page

Visitors move from a guide to the feature it mentions instead of leaving once they have their answer, which lifts user engagement across the site.

---

## What it checks.

The checks of a full internal link audit, run every week as the site grows.

- ### Orphan pages

Pages that no other page links to, often new posts, landing pages from past campaigns, or pages left out of the navigation.

- ### Link depth

How many clicks it takes to reach a page from the homepage. Pages buried deep are crawled less and found less.

- ### Anchor text

The clickable words of each link, checked to describe the page they lead to, and varied rather than repeated word for word.

- ### Links to key pages

Whether your most important pages, like pricing or core features, get links from the content that brings the most visitors.

---

## How to find and fix orphan pages.

The manual method most SEO teams use, and the part the SEO agent takes off your hands.

- ### 1\. List the pages that exist

Export every URL from your XML sitemap, your CMS and the landing pages in Google Analytics. Together they show the pages on your website that people or search engines can actually reach, including the ones the navigation forgot.

- ### 2\. List the pages that are linked

Crawl the site from the homepage, following links the way a search engine crawler does. Every page the crawl reaches is linked from somewhere; every page it never reaches, but that appears in the first list, is an orphan.

- ### 3\. Decide what each orphan deserves

A page that still matters needs links from related content so it can be crawled and indexed properly. A page that no longer serves a purpose should be redirected or removed, so it stops diluting the site.

- ### 4\. Fix orphan pages at the source

Add the links in context, from the most relevant pages, then check again next week, because every new post can create a new orphan. The SEO agent runs all four steps automatically and only asks you to approve the result.

---

## Works with your tools.

The SEO agent maps your links itself. Search Console shows what Google indexes, Semrush or Ahrefs add their audits.

## Questions about internal linking.

Straight answers.

### What are orphan pages?

Orphan pages are pages that no other page on your site links to. Visitors can only reach them from a search, an ad or a direct link, and Google finds them late or not at all. For orphan pages, SEO best practice is simple: link to each one from the pages that cover the same topic, or remove it if it no longer serves a purpose.

### How do I run an internal link audit?

Crawl the site to list every page and every link, then look for three things: pages with no links pointing to them, important pages with very few, and links whose anchor text says nothing about the destination. On a large site this takes hours by hand. The SEO agent runs the internal link audit every week and prepares the fixes.

### Is the SEO agent an internal linking tool?

Yes, but it goes further than most. An internal linking tool usually suggests links that you then add by hand, page by page. The SEO agent writes the links into the right sentences, on every page that needs them, and publishes them on its own or after your approval.

### Is automated internal linking safe?

It is when the links make sense for the reader. Automated internal linking goes wrong when a tool stuffs the same keyword link into every page. The SEO agent only links from sentences that already talk about the topic, keeps the number of links per page reasonable, and shows you every change in a preview first.

### How many internal links should a page have?

There is no fixed number. Google dropped its old guideline of 100 links per page years ago and now only asks for a reasonable number. For a typical article, Ahrefs recommends 3 to 5 contextual links on top of the navigation. What matters more is how many links a page receives: in Zyppy’s study of 23 million internal links, pages with 40 to 44 internal links pointing to them got about four times more clicks from Google than pages with 0 to 4. Your most important pages should receive the most. [Source: Search Engine Land, Google dropped the 100 links per page guideline](https://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-we-dropped-the-100-links-per-page-guideline-but-we-may-take-action-if-it-is-too-spammy-178197) [Source: Ahrefs, “Internal Links for SEO”](https://ahrefs.com/blog/internal-links-for-seo/) [Source: Zyppy, study of 23 million internal links (2022)](https://zyppy.com/seo/internal-links-study/)

### Do internal links pass SEO juice?

Yes. “SEO juice” is the informal name for link equity, the authority that flows from one page to another through links. Ahrefs sums up how it works: the more internal links a page has pointing to it, the more authority it receives, but every link on a page dilutes the value passed through the others. That is why the SEO agent links from your strongest pages to the ones that need a boost, and keeps the number of links on each page reasonable. [Source: Ahrefs, “Internal Links for SEO”](https://ahrefs.com/blog/internal-links-for-seo/)

### What is anchor text, and what makes it good?

Anchor text is the clickable words of a link, usually underlined or shown in color. Google’s guidance is that anchor text should be descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant to both the page it is on and the page it links to. “Time tracking for agencies” tells readers and Google what to expect; “click here” does not. Varying the wording across links also looks more natural than repeating the same phrase. [Source: Google Search Central, “Link best practices for Google”](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/links-crawlable)

### Do internal links help SEO?

Yes. Internal links help Google discover new pages faster, understand how your pages relate to each other, and spread the authority your site earns from external links towards the pages you want to rank. They also keep visitors moving through the site. That is why internal linking is one of the few parts of an SEO strategy that is entirely under your control.

### How is this different from broken links?

Both are routines of the SEO agent. [Broken links](/agents/broken-links) repairs links that lead nowhere. Internal linking adds the links that are missing, so every page is connected to the pages around it.

### Which plan includes it?
