[Agents](/features/agents) [Content](/agents/content) Content refresh

# Content refresh, _true to your product_.

A page still shows last year’s prices, a guide cites a 2019 study. Your [content agent](/agents/content) keeps every page true to your product and to current facts.

## What is a content refresh?

A content refresh turns outdated content back into a page you can trust and that earns its rankings: it [updates existing content](/features/visual-editor) with your current product, current facts, a clearer answer, sections for what people search for now, and dates that are true. Unlike a rewrite from scratch, it keeps the URL, the links and the authority the page has built. It is the fix for content decay, and it works best as [a regular routine](/features/autonomous-agents) rather than a yearly cleanup.

## Why content drifts.

Blog posts, guides and landing pages all start ageing the day they go live. Your product ships new features, renames plans and retires integrations, while the pages that describe it stay the same. The statistics a page relies on get replaced by newer studies, competitors publish newer answers and search intent shifts. Rankings rarely collapse overnight: clicks slide a little every month, which is why content decay goes unnoticed until the traffic is gone. Content maintenance is what prevents it, and on most sites it is nobody’s job.

## Signs a page needs a refresh.

What to look for, even before any tool.

- ### Your product moved on

A plan was renamed, a feature changed, an integration was retired, and the pages that describe them still say otherwise.

- ### Old years and statistics

A title that says 2023, a figure from a study that has since been updated, a source link that no longer works: readers notice, and they leave.

- ### Clicks sliding for weeks

In Search Console, a page that loses a few clicks every week while its impressions hold is losing its position to fresher pages.

- ### A new page on top

A competitor published a more complete answer, and the searches your page used to win now go to them.

---

## How it works.

Every week, on every page.

1. ### Checks against your product

Plan names, prices, features and integrations: the content agent compares each page with your product as it is today and lists what no longer matches.

2. ### Checks the facts

Dates, statistics and source links: it flags what has gone out of date or no longer works.

3. ### Picks up the SEO agent’s alerts

When SEO monitoring flags a page losing clicks over several weeks, the content agent takes it from there and works out what the page now needs to compete.

4. ### Rewrites, then you decide

It updates the page while keeping the URL, the internal links and your brand voice. Approve the update in a preview with a short report, or switch the routine to automatic and the content agent publishes it itself. Every version is kept.

## Before and after.

One product page that drifted away from the range, and what changes after its content refresh. The changes are highlighted.

- **Name: what the page calls the jacket**: Before:The “Classic” jacket, renamed “Heritage” in March
- After:The “Heritage” jacket, with its current price
- **Colours: what the page lists**: Before:Six colours, including one retired last season
- After: The five colours available today
- **Statistics: where the figures come from**: Before:A survey from 2019, with a link that no longer works
- After: The latest edition of the survey, linked and dated

---

## What you get.

- ### Pages true to your product

Every page describes the product you sell today, so visitors never read about a plan, a price or a feature that no longer exists.

- ### Facts readers can trust

Dates, figures and sources stay correct. Content accuracy builds trust with readers and gives them a better user experience.

- ### Traffic you keep

Pages the SEO agent flags for losing clicks win their positions back, and content freshness becomes a weekly routine of your content marketing.

## Content decay, explained.

Content decay is the gradual loss of a page’s traffic and rankings over time. Four causes explain most of it.

- ### Newer answers win

Competitors publish more recent, more complete pages on the same topic, and searchers click the fresher option.

- ### Search intent shifts

The questions people ask change over time: a beginner’s guide ends up competing with comparisons, or the other way round.

- ### Facts go stale

Prices, product names, screenshots and statistics age. Readers who spot one wrong detail stop trusting the rest.

- ### Some searches expect freshness

Google says its “query deserves freshness” systems show fresher content where it is expected, such as news, recurring events and frequently updated topics like product reviews.

## Questions about content refresh.

Straight answers.

### What is content decay?

Content decay is the gradual decline of a page’s organic traffic and rankings over time. It rarely shows as a sudden drop: clicks slide a little every month as newer pages, shifting search intent and outdated facts push the page down. [SEO monitoring](/agents/seo-monitoring), a routine of the SEO agent, flags the pages losing clicks; the content agent refreshes them. [Source: Ahrefs, “What is content decay?”](https://ahrefs.com/blog/content-decay/)

### How often should you refresh content?

It depends on the topic. Pages about prices, tools, statistics or anything with a year in the title need a check every few months; evergreen how-to guides can go a year or more. Rather than a fixed calendar, refresh when the data says so: clicks sliding for several weeks, or a fact that has changed. The content agent checks every page weekly, so each one is refreshed when it needs it.

### Does updating old content improve SEO and GEO?

Often, when the update is real. HubSpot reported an average 106% increase in monthly organic search views on the old posts it updated. What counts is the content quality of the update: new facts, better answers, sections for what people search for now. A content update that only changes the date does not count. Google lists changing a page’s date without substantially changing its content as a sign of content made for search engines rather than people. Freshness matters even more for AI search: according to an Ahrefs study of 17 million citations, the pages AI assistants cite are on average 25.7% fresher than the pages in Google’s organic results, and ChatGPT cites the most recent ones. That is GEO, getting your pages [cited by AI assistants](/features/seo-geo), and an accurate, current page is what they quote. [Source: HubSpot, “Historical optimization”](https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/historical-blog-seo-conversion-optimization) [Source: Google Search Central, “Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content”](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content) [Source: Ahrefs, study of 17 million AI assistant citations (2025)](https://ahrefs.com/blog/do-ai-assistants-prefer-to-cite-fresh-content/)

### Should I change the date when I update a page?

Only if the page really changed. A new date on the same content misleads readers, and Google advises against it. A simple rule: update the date when a returning reader would notice the difference, and leave it alone for a typo or a small fix.

### What is content freshness?

Content freshness is how current a page is: its facts, examples, dates and coverage of the topic. Google uses freshness mainly for searches where recent information matters, like news, recurring events and product reviews. For evergreen topics, accuracy and completeness matter more than the date on the page. [Source: Google Search Central, “A guide to Google Search ranking systems”](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ranking-systems-guide)

### What is content accuracy?

Content accuracy means every fact on a page is still true, starting with your own product: plans, prices, product names, features and integrations, then the statistics and the links to their sources. It matters to visitors, who lose trust at the first wrong price, and to AI assistants, which prefer to quote pages that look reliable. The content agent checks the facts as part of every content refresh.

### What does content maintenance include?

A content audit once a year finds the problems; content maintenance fixes them as they appear. It means refreshing pages that lose traffic, correcting facts that changed, updating screenshots and examples, repairing broken links, and merging pages that compete for the same search. The content agent handles the refresh and the facts; [broken links](/agents/broken-links) and [keyword cannibalization](/agents/keyword-cannibalization) are routines of your SEO agent.

### Should I refresh an old page or write a new one?

Refresh it when the page still targets a search people make and has rankings or links worth keeping. Write a new one when the topic has changed so much that the old page would have to become something else. A refresh keeps the URL and the authority the page has earned, which a new page has to build from zero.

### How is this different from SEO monitoring?

[SEO monitoring](/agents/seo-monitoring) is the SEO agent’s routine: it watches rankings and clicks, and flags the pages losing traffic. Content refresh is the content agent’s job: it rewrites those pages, and it keeps every page accurate even when traffic is fine, because a wrong price costs trust long before it costs rankings.

### How is this different from keyword optimization?

[Keyword optimization](/agents/keyword-optimization) works the searches a page almost ranks for into its copy, to move it up. Content refresh brings back pages that are sliding down and corrects the facts that went out of date. The two often work on the same pages, one run by the SEO agent and the other by the content agent.
